As the seasons change, it is normal for rabbits to shed their fur. This is especially true in the summer, where a thick coat of fur is simply unnecessary with the hot and humid weather. However, some rabbits moult in excess of the four-season-change. For some, this is natural. But for some, this may be attributed to their environment.
If you are noticing that your pet rabbit is shedding excessively this summer, take a look at the temperature settings in your home. It sounds simple, but turning on the air conditioner or fan may be all that is needed to reduce the frequency of your pet rabbits' moult. Also check that your rabbits' cage does not receive direct sunlight or at least receives partial shade. Rabbits are sensitive to changes in temperature due to their fur coat. What may be comfortable for you may be unbearable for them. Keeping your home a consistent temperature throughout the year may be just what is required to minimize excessive fur loss.

I was recently asked by a client what my thoughts were on ZuPreem's "Nature's Promise Western Timothy Hay." This is the brand of hay that I am currently using for my own rabbit. We had originally been using Kaytee Timothy Hay but our local pet store had a sale on the ZuPreem product so we decided to give it a try.
What drew me to the ZuPreem product (other than the sale) is that the hay contains no pesticides. This is very important to me. However, this also translates into a higher price. ZuPreem is cheaper than Oxbow hay but more expensive than Kaytee Hay. Looking at the actual product, ZuPreems' strands of hay feel softer and more crisp. Kaytee's hay in contrast seems to contain a variety of hay - long, short, hard, and soft. Chestnut is a picky eater and only likes soft hay so when we used Kaytee hay, the harder strands would often go to waste. ZuPreem does have some harder strands but not as many as Kaytee. Another thing I noticed is when you pull ZuPreem hay out of the bag, the hay in the top half of the bag seems to expand. This to me is an indicator of freshness and quality that the hay would try to bounce back to its original shape after being compressed in a tight bag. Kaytee's hay does not have such "bounce." Imagining myself to be a rabbit, I would say that ZuPreem hay looks quite appetizing. Chestnut seems to enjoy this new brand of hay, slurping it up like spaghetti. We will continue to use the ZuPreem product (but also keep a look-out for sales to stock up!). |
